Online traffic will be four times larger by 2014

With more people using the web to work, watch videos and chat with friends, the expectation of network equipment maker Cisco is that online traffic quadruple by 2014.

The forecast is for it to grow to 767 exabytes per year in 2014, with about 91% from the online videos. One exabyte equals a billion gigabytes, and to have an idea what it would take 72 million years to see the whole video content circulating the net in the 365 days of 2014.

The increase in speed Internet access, combined with the popularization of television sets in high definition and 3D, are the main factors for the increase in traffic four times between 2009 to 2014.

Cisco points out that over the next four years, the regions with higher generation of IP traffic will be North America, with 19 exabytes per month, Asia Pacific, with 17.4 exabytes per month, Western Europe, with 16.2 exabytes per month and Japan with 4.3 exabytes per month.

Already the fastest growing regions of IP traffic between 2009-2014 are Latin America, with compound annual growth rate of 51%, followed by the Middle East and Africa, with the rate of increase of 45% and Central Europe, with 38 %.
